I'm guessing it's obvious I haven't been here for quite some time.  I will post some of my work I've recently done, but if anyone has been curious on what I've been up to you can go to my art page in Facebook www.facebook.com/thecarlopagul…

And since I don't know what has changed in Deviantart, is there like a way where my post here can automatically crosspost to Facebook or Twitter?

I guess that's it for now

V 2009

www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZLiNa…

I wasn't expecting the remake this early but, I'm sure glad about it... intro trailer is really exciting and pans out how deep the story may go... can't frakkin wait.  It would certainly be a pleasant replacement for my BSG Medication.
V is an old show in the 80s about the coming of an Alien race to Earth.  It ran I think for a total of 24 episodes(?)
that's enough for one season,  I wish they do that and then continue to new stories for the next seasons... in answer to old fans asking to do a V Sequel series.

V Stars Morena Baccarin of Firefly/Serenity and Smallville's Supergirl; Laura Vandervoot.

Speaking of remakes finally saw Abrams' Star Trek...

<SPOILER alert>

It certainly was a great Trek Movie, I've always been a fan of Star Trek, especially the Next Generation.  However one thing that has me thinking after seeing Battlestar Galactica; (comparing the shows to it) is Why is it that everytime they send away crews, they find it necessary to send vital officers?  What BSG grounded into me was how it operated in a military manner... the show respected the chain of command.

Abrams' Star Trek vision however gives it that military aspect, and finds logical reasons why they had to send certain personnels. Certainly he gave that franchise a more realistic not always happy carefree future.  Loved it.  The plot was overall a very good reboot for the series/title, and opens up possibilities for a new TV series (which I wish)  or multiple sequels.  Loved it very much. there were however certain characters that seemed to annoy me just a bit... although they did manage to make it enjoyable by at least giving them their trademark lines.  I laughed with  "Damnit commander! I'm a doctor not a physicist"... such cheesy delivery could only be saved by nostalgia LOL.  Or I was probably laughing at how often Bones says it before.

So yeah, a reboot. An alternate universe existing in parallel to the old universe... so many possibilities when you think about it.  Best Trek movie I've seen.  I wish for a new series about this parallel universe!

No More Newly Imported Books in the Philippines; the Reason Why

Just recovering from an intestinal dysfunction, I felt like its in a relapse after reading this at several guy's multiply account.

It really sucks to have government officials this corrupt.  Philippine customs already charge a hefty price on storage costs alone, and misc, questionable additions to that, and now they are going to tax imported books that according to international laws, shouldn't be done.  The Philippines subscribes to that same law, and now the government chooses to ignore that.

Our customs officials are vampires.

Subject: No More Newly Imported Books in the Philippines; the Reason Why
To:

Grr! This news makes my blood boil! Picked this up on a blog and I'm spreading the news to help stop this outrage.

In the last few months, the importation of books into the Philippines has virtually stopped. (To those of you who frequent bookstores, I don't know if you've noticed.) The reason why is explained in this article by Robin Hemley, a University of Iowa creative writing professor currently on a fellowship in the Philippines.

If you have no time to read the article, the essence is that because the Bureau of Customs has decided to impose duties on the importation of books into the Philippines.
This, despite the 1950 Florence Agreement on the Importation of Educational, Scientific and Cultural Materials (which you can see here), which the Philippines ratified in 1979. The preamble of the agreement states: "Considering that the free exchange of ideas and knowledge and, in general, the widest possible dissemination of the diverse forms of self-expression used by civilizations are vitally important both for intellectual progress and international understanding, and consequently for the maintenance of world peace...", an indisputable proposition.

here's an excerpt from Robin Hemley's article (i shortened it a bit. better if you can read the whole thing.) -

...Over coffee one afternoon, a book-industry professional (whom I can't identify) told me that for the past two months virtually no imported books had entered the country, in part because of the success of one book, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The book, an international best seller, had apparently attracted the attention of customs officials. When an examiner named Rene Agulan opened a shipment of books, he demanded that duty be paid on it.

The importer of Twilight made a mistake and paid the duty requested. A mistake because such duty flies in the face of the Florence Agreement, a U.N. treaty that was signed by the Philippines in 1952, guaranteeing the free flow of "educational, scientific, and cultural materials" between countries and declaring that imported books should be duty-free. Mr. Agulan told the importer that because the books were not educational (i.e., textbooks) they were subject to duty. Perhaps they aren't educational, I might have argued, but aren't they "cultural"?

No matter. With this one success under their belt, customs curtailed all air shipments of books entering the country. Weeks went by as booksellers tried to get their books out of storage and started intense negotiations with various government officials.

What doubly frustrated booksellers and importers was that the explanations they received from various officials made no sense. It was clear that, for whatever reason—perhaps the 30-billion-peso ($625 million) shortfall in projected customs revenue—customs would go through the motions of having a reasonable argument while in fact having none at all.

Customs Undersecretary Espele Sales explained the government's position to a group of frustrated booksellers and importers in an Orwellian PowerPoint presentation, at which she reinterpreted the Florence Agreement as well as Philippine law RA 8047, providing for "the tax and duty-free importation of books or raw materials to be used in book publishing." For lack of a comma after the word "books," the undersecretary argued that only books "used in book publishing" (her underlining) were tax-exempt.

"What kind of book is that?" one publisher asked me afterward. "A book used in book publishing." And she laughed ruefully.

I thought about it. Maybe I should start writing a few. Harry the Cultural and Educational Potter and His Fondness for Baskerville Type.

Likewise, with the Florence Agreement, she argued that only educational books could be considered protected by the U.N. treaty. Customs would henceforth be the arbiter of what was and wasn't educational.

"For 50 years, everyone has misinterpreted the treaty and now you alone have interpreted it correctly?" she was asked.

"Yes," she told the stunned booksellers.

Throughout February and March, bookstores seemed on the verge of getting their books released—all their documents were in order, but the rules kept changing. Now they were told that all books would be taxed: 1 percent for educational books and 5 percent for noneducational books. A nightmare scenario for the distributors; they imagined each shipment being held for months as an examiner sorted through the books. Obviously, most would simply pay the higher tax to avoid the hassle.

Distributors told me they weren't "capitulating" but merely paying under protest. After all, customs was violating an international treaty that had been abided by for over 50 years. Meanwhile, booksellers had to pay enormous storage fees. Those couldn't be waived, they were told, because the storage facilities were privately owned (by customs officials, a bookstore owner suggested ruefully). One bookstore had to pay $4,000 on a $10,000 shipment.

The day after the first shipment of books was released, an internal memo circulated in customs congratulating themselves for finally levying a duty on books, though no mention was made of their pride in breaking an international treaty...

Please forward this or disseminate this in any way you can. In the name of reading.

Free Comic Book Day

Comic Odyssey orgnized one big signing at their branch in Robinson's Galleria. It was more like a family reunion as we caught up with our fellow creators...  After it was over, some of us hanged out in another Comic book shop; Druid's Keep, in Magallanes.  Others went home,  Leinil went to see Wolverine

I'm not aware that Hot Toys' Iron man is that articulated, but I do know it's tough to pose HT figures.  I'm always dreading to touch my Deunan figure.  Either way, I can't help but be amazed by this animation hahaha!

Can't get tired watching it LOL

Damn I can't wait to get the Mark 2 fig

Who Watched the Watchmen

The Watchmen Movie
(spoilers ahead, even to those who've read it)

Saw the movie last Saturday…

So, did I like the movie version?

I guess I’ll be among the lot who would enjoy being splattered with Alan Moore’s venom and spite, because I seriously loved the movie. (Duuude, Alan Moore just killed me! Yes!)

Zack Snyder once again proves that a movie can be loyal to the source material… well not totally but still, the most loyal comic book adaptation to date.  It has finally been filmed with full respect.  The plot preserved, the core unremoved

(Before I proceed, let it be known you are free to express your opinion, I will not entertain any debates… if you do open one with others please maintain mutual respect… yes this is pretty much a very sensitive matter to the comics community hehe)

The graphic novel is credited to being the most influential of modern superhero fiction, and indeed it came out when hero books are mostly adventure type stories.  Watchmen became a psychological biography of masked vigilantes, questioning what society sees as good, and making us explore our own humanity and question our morals.

And the movie couldn’t have been released in a better time (the worse being earlier).  Hero movies have been popping up everywhere within the last decade.  And people seeing those would have been treated to the same formula:  A hero vs villain angle.  Watchmen will have offered a different recipe of what is good and what is bad.

I loved the movie, I’m sure not everyone will share the same adoration of it.  I loved the different angle on the ending since it provides more logic to everything and even grounds the story more towards a realistic parallel 1985… well to me at least.  And it has been always the fear of that inevitable outcome that will engage the moviegoers rather than an unknown and sudden alien threat.   I actually think it was better than the original (there I said it, please put your pitchforks down), as it gives more reason for Doc Manhattan to leave the galaxy… an Alien threat would have people begging for Manhattan to help them, actually, aside from just becoming united against a common enemy.  A common enemy within makes it the more scarier.

And my review: The casting was really great, I was completely sold on who they were portraying.  I can say nothing more.  I also enjoyed the intro very very very much.  The whole movie was Epic
Did I say I loved it? The only problem is, non comic book fans would probably not receive it as good.  It also did get a little dragging around the middle.  There were missing parts, sure, but it didn’t have that much effect to the whole.  And besides not everyone will have the will to sit through a 5 hour movie. (And surely not everyone enjoys reading a book)

Now, would Alan Moore hate it?  Some concludes he would.  I personally have no idea what he would think about it.  I mean he is avoiding a glimpse of the movie because of his hatred of Hollywood, mainly because of how it has treated most of his creations.  All of them were way off from their original sources, and because of Fox’s LXG, Alan Moore had even been accused of plagiarism.  Anybody would be definitely pissed off with that, since after all he had nothing to do with the direction Fox went for.  SO Thank God, Fox never made the movie, Thank you Warner for taking more control of your titles

As said, Mr. Alan Moore has cursed Hollywood and severed all goodwill for having mutilated his creations and being sued was the final nail in the coffin.  Now, if Hollywood had started off adapting Moore novels with the same degree of respect and vision as Snyder did on Watchmen, who knows what he would be thinking about Hollywood… probably still hate them but I’m guessing nothing near venom and spite.  Actually now I’m wondering what a Snyder directed LXG would look like.  I haven’t yet read The League book, but I am aware how grossly inaccurate the characters were… so no question that what I watched wasn’t Moore’s.

The only person who can probably persuade Moore to watch the Watchmen movie, would be Dave Gibbons, the book’s artist… it’s a slim chance.

In whole is it better than the book? Well no, there will always be something missing, something to further deconstruct or understand a hero.  But the movie still had presented the same questions as in the book.  As much as some  things could be told better in comic book form, subtleties can be enhanced by movies and make it more effective conveying expressions.  Did it ruin Alan Moore’s creation? Well it made me go back and reread the book, and still enjoy it.   So no.  Loving the book doesn’t mean hating the movie and vice versa.

The whole adaptation doesn’t end with the movie alone.  Warner had produced two other companion stories, based on the books within the book; Under the Hood, and the animated Tales of the Black Freighter… a review can be read here: www.aintitcool.com/node/40376

There’s also a rumor that on the DVD release an alternate ending will be featured much more loyal to the book.  Although I hope they don’t limit that to the Blu-ray; much like what they did to the features of the Dark Knight DVD…. Grrrrrrr

Apologies to the English speaking crowd since the audio is in Filipino
