After attending James Jean's talk at Benilde, buying his book, and then someone asking us what we think about ballpen illustrations, I decided to give the medium another whirl after almost 2 decades.

Good thing :iconthewho78: never came to get the ballpoint pens he asked for... Pre, I'm keeping them haha!

one of the wonderful or frustrating things (depending on how you look at) is that it forces you to commit to your strokes, I had a job that forced me to wait around for hours at a time, and all I'd have available is the cardboard backer of a sheet forum pad for paper and a standard plain old Bic ball point pen with me, was also a standard drawing tool as a child! I love working with them out right! you can get some wonderful results with just a ball point pen

Bic definitely would make an ideal sketching pen, but not here in my country... for some reason after several days, it won't write. The textures it produces are great, and it's a shame I can't use it

Well they had been the main stay of disposable pens here for many decades. Only true reason I used them is that they had been so readily available, everybody use them. Alas it's actually hard to find the original plain Bic pen any more. They all seem to have moved into this gel ink style pen.. This type of ink just dose not give off the same results as the old Bic standard ink. That ink you could lay down gentle tones of shading as the ink came out almost dry, and took many passes in strokes to build up, so it was great for shading.
In a way it was like a dry brush technique, I got used to doing that with them. I can't seem to get the same results with the newer types of Inks as they flow to smoothly now. Of course these pens were never designed to be artist pens in the first place. It also has to do with the type of paper your working with, I find the ultra smooth Ink jet printer paper don't work good at all for this type of thing as it has nearly no "tooth" or Rag content if you will. high rag paper is far better suited for this work and gives better results.

Depending on where you live? humidity does play havoc with pens.
I find here, come summer time when it's very hot and high humidity the pens(any make)tend to leak, the ink seems to thin out to much and just blots all over the paper, requiring the tip to be wiped cleaned steadily to prevent this.
I suppose someone living in a place that is very dry would find the opposite in that the pens would dry up rather quickly as the surrounding dry atmosphere would pull all the moisture out the pen, Or someone working in a tightly closed office building with steady air conditioning. It may also stand to reason that depending on where the ink was made, and what geographical market it was designed for? the design of the formula for the Ink would be better suited to some climates then others.
It's shame that they don't work for you there, they really do work nicely.
